DO YOU WORK WITH YOUTH!
DO NOT MISS THE NATIONAL YOUTH DEVELOPMENT SYMPOSIUM!!

The National Youth Development Symposium is the biggest youth employment conference in the country.  It will feature workshops and speakers on the best state-of-the-art practices in the youth workforce development field.  The conference is sponsored by the National Association of Workforce Development Professionals ( www.nawdp.org).  I am proud to say that over the years I have been invited to do more workshops at this conference than any other presenter.  This year I will be doing a special preconference session titled:

YOU CAN BE A BARRIER BUSTER!
NEW WAYS TO ELIMINATE BARRIERS TO EMPLOYMENT IN YOUTH!

Barrier elimination strategies are stuck in tradition. They used to work, but they cannot overcome the powerful multiple challenges youth face today. This workshop for management and staff will reinvent your approach to barriers!  Learn how to work from a strengths first model and empower youth to use their assets to eliminate their obstacles.  Discover how proactive normalizing barrier conversations make it possible to discuss barriers that youth often hide.  Mobilize the power of peer barrier removal role models so they can convince youth to overcome the hurdles they face.  Youth need to go to supportive services for barriers you cannot address, but they rarely go.    Peer role models can sell them on going to referral resources in ways that you cannot match.  The workshop includes free barrier removal handouts.  Help youth become barrier busters and shorten their pathway to employment!

I look forward to seeing you at the conference!

TRAUMA AND YOUTH EMPLOYMENT PROGRAMS
A MUST READ REPORT!

Trauma is one of the most devastating life experiences.  It is relatively under assessed and not understood in the vast majority of youth employment programs.  When a program and staff become trauma informed, they can help youth recover and make progress in many areas of their lives.  This report reviews the prevalence and effects of child and youth trauma and discusses trauma informed supports and interventions, with an eye to applying the information to youth employability programs.

HARD WORK ON SOFT SKILLS!
HOW DO YOU CREATE A CULTURE OF WORK
IN WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS?

We all know we need to help the people in our programs learn soft skills and improve their emotional intelligence, but few programs have achieved success in this critical area.  The following report describes four highly regarded workforce development programs, concentrating on how they cultivate soft skills.  All of these programs approach the task in many ways, mixing and matching their tactics to the needs of particular groups of people.  Still, each of them has developed a degree of expertise or a distinctive style in one technique that stands out from all the others.  This report is must reading for workforce development professionals.

HOW HIRING FORMERLY INCARCERATED
JOB SEEKERS BENEFITS YOUR COMPANY!

A GREAT REPORT FOR EMPLOYERS, JOB DEVELOPERS,
BUSINESS SERVICE REPRESENTATIVES,
EMPLOYMENT SPECIALISTS AND PEOPLE IN REENTRY!

Back to Business: How Hiring Formerly Incarcerated Job Seekers Benefits Your Company is a new report from the Trone Center for Justice & Equality. Today, 70 million Americans-one in three adults-have a criminal record. When companies break down these barriers to employment and provide second chances, they can have a positive impact on the lives of individuals, the trajectory of families, on the health of their businesses, and on the growth of the American economy. The bottom line: doing good is good for business.
